Jean Mintoft - 1

Jean has enjoyed drawing and painting all her life, but didn't take it seriously until she moved to the west coast of Wales in 1999. There, she started to paint landscapes in watercolours or pastels and often did commissions for the holidaymakers who came to the area. In 2014 she moved to Plymouth and joined the Plymouth Watercolour Society and a couple of other art groups.

At the present Jean paints mainly in oils or acrylics. She finds watercolours challenging, but enjoys doing watercolour sketches in her holiday diaries. She exhibits regularly with the PWS, at the Trinity Art Exhibition and with the Drawn to the Valley group of artists. She held a solo Exhibition in Devonport Guildhall just before lockdown 1 in March 2020.

Chris Moulder - 1

Chris has spent some time as the Chairman of the PWS, and is a regular exhibitor at our exhibitions.

Chris writes:

Having not painted since school days retirement in 2006 was a great opportunity to have a go! Attending many workshops and joining the Plymouth Watercolour Society gave me the chance to learn and spend time with like minded students and experienced artists. Over the following years I have been able to continue enjoying my hobby and exhibit work at various open art exhibitions in Devon and Cornwall.

A move to North Cornwall 5 years ago has encourage me to explore the stunning coastline with many chances to paint seascapes. It has also been a period of experimentation with different mediums.

The painting of the hippo, entitled 'Hippo in Love', was done in watercolour as a present for someone who had helped him with an investigation into the life of an artist who had painted a picture from inside an internment camp in WWII. Not for sale.

The picture to the right was done at a workshop run by Nicola Tilley, and is entitled 'Cornish Jewels'. (Watercolour, Unframed, 22cm x 30cm, £30).

Robert Turner - 2

The painting on the right is an acrylic portrait of Paula, the tutor of a drumming class some months ago, and seen by Rob as a deeply spiritual and giving person. He was able to put in a symbolic theme which represented this...

Rob enjoys creating such portraits, from a good photographic image and to have appropriate symbolism added, and not necessarily on an expensive financial basis.

The painting on the far right is a watercolour still life, painted some time ago. (Framed, 25cm x 32cm, £50.)

David Blackhurst - 1

I resumed painting on my return to the UK after many years abroad. I was encouraged by my friend and neighbour in South Wales, John Selway, a renowned Welsh artist, who regrettably died in 2017.

He said something like: 'the only thing that prevents your ability is your imagination'. I'm still trying not to paint what I see. 'Vigilant imagination'.

The painting on the right is entitled 'Big Pit'. I lived about 10 miles from Big Pit, World Heritage Centre, visiting many times each year, and frequently during the winter when covered in deep snow at +300m, taking loads of photos for reference. Hopefully this is what it may have looked like in 1900. (Watercolour 50 x 40cm. Dec 2010 framed. £180)

The painting on the far right is entitled 'Brooklyn Bridge'. I was attracted by a photo of the bridge cables, and perspective, and thought it would look nice with a sunset. (Watercolour 40 x 29cm. June 2020 framed. £150)

The painting on the far right is entitled 'Japanese Noble Woman'. I painted some later Japanese prints in the 80's but this one went missing - possibly during one of many home moves? Catherine Vasey

When I left school I went to the Croydon Art School to do a year's diploma course. When I finished that course I decided that I didn't want to pursue art as a career, but preferred to keep it as a hobby instead. I love the medium of watercolour as it's so challenging and you can never pre-determine how your painting will turn out, which is great fun.

All these paintings are watercolour on paper.
